Growing up, I saw myself in all the fly, quirky, smart-mouthed, stylish Black girls on TV — Laura Winslow, Zaria Peterson, Moesha, Hilary & Ashley Banks, Tia & Tamera, Breanna Barnes. They were book smart, street smart, funny, fashion-forward — could get into drama and finesse their way out. Even when they messed up, they had heart. They were good girls with edge — and I felt that. Heavy.

But somewhere along the way, that representation faded. We stopped seeing girls like that — the sweet-and-sassy ones who held it down in class, rocked a fire fit, and still had just enough attitude to stand tall. That’s why I started Good Girl Gang — for girls like us. Girls who pray, slay, and pop off respectfully. Girls who know you don’t have to be perfect to be powerful.
